Theatre Scholarship Information

How can I win the scholarship?
Students must make an appointment to come to Allen for an interview and audition. They must bring a letter of recommendation or have one sent from their high school drama instructor or other appropriate source. Those interested in performing must present at least one memorized piece, 1-3 minutes in length. A contrasting performance piece is highly recommended, but not required. Those students who are interested in design or technical theatre need not audition but must bring a portfolio of their previous work to the interview. Students should contact the Admissions Office, 620-365-5116, ext. 268 to schedule an appointment.  Students may also contact Tony Piazza, Allen Theatre Director, at 620-365-5116, ext. 224, or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for any other questions they might have about the theatre program.

What are the scholarship requirements?
The student must take and maintain at least 12 credit hours per semester with a minimum 2.0 GPA.  The student must also participate in at least one production per semester and take at least one 3 credit hour theatre or communication course per semester.

Who is eligible?
The scholarship is designed for both theatre majors and non-majors, either those who perform onstage or those who work backstage in a directorial, design or technical capacity. We are looking for high school graduates who enjoy working on a theatrical production in any capacity and would enjoy doing so at the college level. The activity scholarship is intended for Kansas residents, but there is some additional scholarship money available for exceptional out of state theatre students.

How much does the scholarship cover?
The activity scholarship covers full tuition and book rental for a minimum of 12 credit hours to a maximum of 20 credit hours units per semester. The scholarship is awarded on a yearly basis and may be renewed for a second year.

What doesn't the scholarship cover?
The scholarship does not cover student fees, which amount to $16 per credit hour, or any special workbooks or supplies required by an instructor for personal student use. The activity scholarship also does not cover room and board on campus.

How can I pay for the other expenses?
We have a full range of grants, loans, and work-study opportunities available. Please contact our Financial Aid Office for further information at 620-365-5116, ext. 263 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Also, if a student has a GPA of 3.5 or better coming into college and maintains a 3.5 GPA or better during college, they are eligible for additional Academic Scholarship money, $1000 per year, which may be applied to on-campus room and board and student fees.
