The Edward Zahn Agriculture Scholarship:
Richard Zahn established this scholarship in 1999 in honor of his father, Ed Zahn, a long-time agriculture instructor at Iola High School. Richard is a 1971 graduate of Allen. Today Richard is retired from Schering-Plough Laboratories, the U.S. prescription pharmaceutical marketing arm of Shering-Plough.
What the Scholarship Includes:
This scholarship provides housing (no food service), tuition, fees and books for four agriculture students. In addition, up to 10 hours of optional work study may be earned each week after satisfying the work requirements of the scholarship. Priority deadline is March 1.
Realizing the advantages of the residential experience of a working farm, Richard Zahn made a donation to construct a house on the land in 1999. The house serves as the 'dorm' for the Zahn Scholarship students. Allen Community College contracted with the Iola High School building trades class to build the 2240 square foot house. The Zahn Scholarship House has four bedrooms and three baths, is handicapped accessible, and can easily house up to 8 students. It has a full kitchen which includes a large chest freezer. Its outward appearance is log siding with a natural stone front.
