|Various support services are provided for students with disabilities free of charge. In order to receive these services, students must submit current documentation to the Director of Guidance and Counseling for Iola Campus or Director of Outreach Student Services for Burlingame Campus.
Support services available to students are listed below. This is not an exhaustive list but does include the most commonly used support services.
Students using note-takers should attend all classes unless illness or an emergency prevents them from attending. The Student Success Center is not responsible for providing notes to a student if the student is absent from class for reasons other than those related to the student’s disability.
Students should obtain a list of textbooks needed for their classes from the bookstore. Title, author, edition, and year should be the information included.
Contact the Director of the Student Success Center to determine if textbooks are available on cassette or Etext from Recordings for the Blind & Dyslexic, Inc.
In the event that books need to be recorded by Student Success Center Staff, a class syllabus needs to be submitted as soon as possible.
Testing Accommodations in the Student Success Center
Most students requesting testing accommodations will be able to take their tests through the Student Success Center. The following procedures should be followed:
Extended Test Time or Less Distractive Environment
Students requesting only extended test time or a less distractive environment will usually take exams in the SSC Testing Room. Students should remind their instructors to drop the exam off in the SSC before the test date.
Extended Test Time with test recorded onto tape
Students that need extended test time with a reader will have tests administered in the Student Success Center unless the instructor and student have made alternate arrangements.
Students should arrange with their instructor to leave the exam in the SSC at least two days prior to the exam. This will allow SSC staff to read the test onto tape before the student is scheduled to take the exam.
Students who qualify for extended test time will be given time and one half to complete the exam.
Students who need tutoring assistance, can use the resources available on campus that include the Student Success Center tutors, Writing Center tutors, and various departmental tutors.
Students must attend the class to receive tutoring. If a student is not attending class, his/her tutoring will be suspended! If you have a problem attending class, see the tutor coordinator.
Homework should be attempted prior to a tutoring session. The session should be used to address problems encountered when attempting homework or questions regarding the subject matter in a course. If a student is not attempting to complete homework prior to the tutoring sessions, tutoring will be suspended and the student will need to meet with the tutor coordinator before tutoring is reinstated.
**There are some instances when the tutor coordinator is unable to find a tutor in a particular subject area. When this occurs the student should stay in close contact with the instructor regarding questions over subject matter in the course.
