ACCC National Education Association Scholarship
(ACCC-NEA)

Established by the Allen County Community College-National Education Association to provide educational opportunities for students majoring in elementary or secondary education.


ACCC Business Scholarship
by Frank and Gerry Uphoff

Established by the Uphoffs, instructors at Allen County Community College, to provide educational opportunities for students majoring in business and/or computer education.


Allen County Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship

Established to promote medical education. The scholarship is available for students with a major in pre-medicine education.


David L. Allen Memorial

Established in loving memory of David, former Development Officer at Allen County Community College. Without the persistence and endurance demonstrated by David during his illness and through the application process for the Endowment Challenge, the majority of scholarships described within this brochure would not have been made possible. Limited to a Crest High School graduate.


Mrs. Frederick G. (Ada Norton) Apt, Sr. Memorial
by Elizabeth Lee Apt

Established by Ms. Apt in memory of her mother, Ada Norton Apt, to encourage an interest in elementary education. Her dedication to and love of learning grew as a student from a one-room school near Moran to teaching at Washington Grade School in Iola. Limited to an Iola or Moran resident preferably majoring in elementary education and pursuing a 4-yr BA/BS degree.


Heather Lynn Arnold Memorial
by Doris and Bill Arnold

Established in memory of Heather by her grandparents. Heather was studying elementary education at Emporia State University when she lost her life in an automobile accident. Her grandparents hope that other young people will benefit and continue their education with the assistance of this scholarship. Preference will be given to elementary education majors.


ALCO Implement, Inc.

This scholarship was established during the Endowment Challenge to honor Allen County, encourage future graduates and continued development in the county. Preference will be given to students majoring in agriculture or agri-business related field of study.


Denise C. Apt & Frederick G. Apt, Jr. Scholarship

Long-time residents of Allen County and supporters of education, the Apt's established this scholarship to demonstrate their concern and belief that educational opportunities open many doors to personal and professional growth.


Gerry & Don Bain Scholarship

Established in 1996 in recognition of the role that ACCC has played in the Bain's education and the education of their four children. Don's 32 year career in the Iola school district as teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent and Gerry's support of that career indicates the importance that both attach to education.


Norma D. & Robert W. Barclay Athletic Scholarship

Established in 1996 by Norma and Bob to recognize their continued support and endless devotion to the institution and students. Bob was the chemistry instructor at ACCC for 36 years. Preference is given to the men's basketball and cross country/track programs.


Klein Boyd Memorial Scholarship
by Mary Boyd

Established in memory of Klein Boyd who was a member of the School Board 257 and a Trustee of the Allen County Junior College at the time of planning and establishing the new campus on Cottonwood. His children also attended the college. Preference is given to students majoring in engineering or education.


Jack Brown Agency

This scholarship was established during the Endowment Challenge to provide financial assistance for athletes attending ACCC.


Mary and Russell R. Brown Scholarship

Established in 1988 by Helen Gates Whitehead for students showing an interest and desire in pursuing a course of study preparatory to higher education.


Rotary Club of Burlingame, Kansas Scholarship

Established in 1996 by the Rotary Club of Burlingame, Kansas for the benefit of Burlingame area students. This is one of two scholarships provided by the Rotary Club of Burlingame.


Deanne & Mark Burris Athletic Scholarship

Established to recognize an athlete who defines excellence in academics, as well as, athletics. It is preferred that the recipient of this award continue his or her education beyond ACCC in the areas of engineering or education.


Mary Carpenter Memorial

Established by the will of Mary Almack Carpenter, a long-time educator whose husband was Dean of Iola Junior College from 1932 to 1943. Recipients are selected based on financial need.


Frank R. Caywood Memorial Scholarship
by Shari Caywood

Established by Mrs. Caywood in loving memory of her husband, Frank R. Caywood. During his lifetime, Mr. Caywood was a benefactor to many worthwhile endeavors promoting the betterment of mankind.


Mack C. Colt Scholarship
by Mack V.and Sara C. Colt

Mack C. Colt was a long-time civic leader and oil pioneer in lola. He was a former Mayor of the City as well as President of the School Board. A graduate of Yale, he was a staunch supporter of education. He would want the scholarship made available to deserving students wishing to further themselves with a practical education. Preference is given to an individual demonstrating financial need with a minimum 3.0 high school GPA.


Copy Products, Inc. Athletic Scholarship
by Toni and Vernon Starks

Established in 1996 by the Starks, long-time residents of Iola, KS. Their desire to show appreciation and support for the lola community is the foundation for this athletic scholarship.


Edith and Harry Darby Foundation Scholarship

Established by the Harry Darby Foundation to continue their philosophy of helping the men and women of today and tomorrow by providing scholarships. Selection is based on enrollment in at least 15 credit hours per semester leading to a bachelor's degree and a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students must demonstrate qualities of leadership, citizenship, and moral standards.


Harold A. (Buddy) Davis Scholarship

Established by Mildred L. Yoho in memory of her brother, Harold A. (Buddy) Davis, an ACCC scholarship supporter before his death. Preference is given to an Iola High School graduate and selection is based on financial need and academic success.


Dieker Family Scholarship
by the Tom, Jeff & Mike Dieker Families

Established in 1995 by members of the Dieker Family to show their appreciation to ACCC for the education provided. Members of the family went on to have careers in veterinary medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, banking, chiropractic medicine, and other fields. Limited to students from the Westphalia area preferably majoring in agriculture or related field or pre-medicine.


The Emprise Bank Scholarship

Established to help meet the Endowment Challenge of 1996 and the educational challenges of the future. Preference is given to Emprise staff & children.


Bill F. & Betty J. Fine Scholarship

They believe everyone should have an opportunity for an education, therefore established this scholarship. Students must be majoring in music or computer science with a minimum 3.0 high school GPA.


First National Bank of LeRoy Scholarship

Established in 1996 by First National Bank of LeRoy to award a deserving graduate of LeRoy High School or a Coffey County resident.


First State Bank Scholarship, Burlingame - Osage City

Established in 1996 for the educational benefit of Osage County students on behalf of the dedicated employees, officers and directors of the First State Bank. Limited to Burlingame or Osage High School graduates attending ACCC.


R.E. French Oil Company

This scholarship was established in support of the Endowment Challenge to secure future opportunities for students attending ACCC. Preference is given to students in energy related fields of study.


Friends of ACCC, Osage County

Established in 1996 by Osage County Clubs, organizations, businesses and individuals for the benefit of Osage County students attending Allen County Community College. Limited to Osage County High School graduates.


Howard K. Gilpin Memorial
by Mrs. Helen Gilpin

Established in Howard's memory in 1995 by his wife, Helen. Howard was always interested in education and served 12 years on Iola's Board of Education, then called District 10, when Iola Jr. College was still under the Board's jurisdiction.


Griffin Athletic and Activity Scholarship

Established in 1989 by Dr. and Mrs. Bill Griffin, former president of ACCC. Preference is given to out of county and out-of state athletes.


Hugh Haire Scholarship

Established upon his retirement in 1987 after serving the college for 37 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator.


Katy &Hugh Haire Scholarship

This scholarship was created in memory of Hugh Haire, beloved father, coach, educator, and administrator for Allen County Community College. Hugh unexpectedly passed away during the Endowment Challenge Campaign of 1996. The loss of Hugh during this milestone makes the accomplishments and countless contributions even greater. It is satisfying to know the many efforts were successful and Hugh's memory will live-on. Katy continues to be an advocate for education and supports the college.


Robert L. Hampton Scholarship

In honor of Mr. Hampton and his dedicated service to the college as librarian for 22 years. Preference is given to Allen County rural residents with a minimum of 3.5 high school GPA.


Joe R. & Flo C. Haynes Athletic Scholarship

Established in 1996 by the Haynes' who supported athletics during the twenty-five-year period of their teaching at ACCC. Joe was baseball coach from 1971-1973. Preference is given to the men's baseball and basketball programs.


Joe R. & Flo C. Haynes Business Scholarship

Established in 1996 by the Haynes' who together taught a total of 48 years in the Business Department of ACCC. Preference is given to an employee of Iola Ken's Pizza or an area food service establishment. Students must be enrolled in 6 hours of business classes each semester.


Herbert & Gertrude Henderson Scholarship

Established in 1991 through the estate of Herbert and Gertrude Henderson. The Hendersons believed a good education was very important and therefore, scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students in their name.


Reverend Donald Hood Memorial

Established in 1995 with gifts from family and friends upon the death of Reverend Hood. Reverend Hood preached at the Iola Christian Church from 1968 to 1974 and then transferred to the United Methodist denomination. He served in this denomination until his death and lived in Iola the last 9 years of his life.


Willard Horde Memorial

This memorial was established to recognize and honor Mr. Horde who was a long-time resident of Allen County and housing developer. His hands were responsible for providing refuge to many Iolans. Willard will long be remembered for his kind heart and warm smile. Limited to an Allen County resident with preference given to students majoring in electronics, CAD/CAM, or manufacturing technology


Jack Hixon Memorial Scholarship

Established May 24, 1995, in memory of a long-time Iola businessman Jack Hixon, by family and friends. Married with a young daughter, he attended Jr. College, then was owner of Hixon's Office Supplies & Equipment for thirty-five years, and was always ready to encourage youth. Our wish is this scholarship to be awarded annually to a deserving student with good family values.


Dorothy F. & L. Lynn Horton Scholarship

Established in 1989 by the estate of Dorothy Horton. Mrs. Horton taught school for 25 years. Recipients must be pursuing an education leading to a vocation, must have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate a financial need.


Humboldt National Bank Scholarship

Established in 1996 in recognition of the Bank's 100th Anniversary and in honor of all the directors, officers and staff who helped achieve this great milestone. Preference is given to Allen or Woodson County residents and/or employees, children or dependents of Humboldt National Bank.


Iola Bank & Trust Staff & Directors Scholarship
by Iola Bank and Trust Co., Staff and Directors

Established in 1995 by the directors and employee-owners of the Iola Bank and Trust Co. Donations of individuals were matched by the bank. lola Bank and Trust Co. was designated depository at the founding of Allen County Community College and continues to be one, today. Preference is given to lola Bank staff, children, & directors.


Iola Citizen Scholarship
by the City of Iola

Established for a resident of the Iola area to pursue a degree in political science or general business.


Iola City Employee Scholarship
by the City of Iola

Established in the name of the City of Iola employees for achieving further training or skills which will enhance their value to the organization. Applicants must be employees of the City of Iola.


Iola Pharmacy, Inc.
by Jim Arnott, Jeff Dieker, and Bill Walden

This scholarship was established during the Endowment Challenge to reward deserving students, preferably majoring in pre-pharmacy or pre-medicine, with a 3.0 high school GPA.


Iola Rotary Club Scholarship

The Rotary Club of Iola was founded in 1917, and in 1996 established this scholarship to implement its dedication to young people and their academic success. Preference is given to the children of Iola Rotarians.


Ed Jewell Memorial

Established in 1971. Mr. Jewell was a mathematics instructor at lola Junior High and taught mechanical drawing and engineering drawing courses at Iola Junior College, Preference is given to students majoring in mathematics.


Miles Kessinger Memorial Scholarship
by Don & Doris Kessinger

Established in Memory of their son Miles Kessinger. He was involved many years in 4-H work. Scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students who demonstrate a financial need and also have belonged to an Allen County 4-H Club for at least 3 years. Students are required to submit their 4-H workbooks for evaluation and a record of 4-H activities.


Harry and Ruth Kramer

Established in memory of Maxine's parents. Recipients chosen on the basis of academic achievement and potential for leadership.


Katherine (Koester) & Jacob Kress Memorial
by Dr. Jacob (Jay) Kress

Established in 1995 by their son, Dr. Jacob (Jay) Kress. They believed that power lies in knowledge, not in numbers. To be awarded to a student endeavoring a degree in pre-medical or pre-dental.


(Wm.) Paul Kress Memorial
by Dr. Jacob (Jay) Kress

Established in 1995 by Dr. Jacob (Jay) Kress, his brother. This scholarship is to assist a student pursuing a degree in veterinarian medicine, or landscape engineering.


John Lawrence Memorial

Established by John Lawrence's golfing buddies after his death in 1984, and continued by his friends and family in recognition of his dedication to the ACJAC athletic scholarship program.


Joyce & Harry Lee Scholarship

Etablished in honor of the Lee's for their commitment to their family, community, and the future educational needs of tomorrows leaders.


Mary Marjorie & Lester Lee
Iola Lions Club Scholarship

Established in 1987 by the Iola Lions Club with money made available to the club as part of the estate of Lester and Mary Majorie Lee. This scholarship is awarded based on financial need, with preference being given to the legal offspring of a member of the Iola Lions Club or a Kansas Lions Club.


Allen County Community College Lions Club Scholarship

The ACCC Lions Club was established in 1994, and in 1996 organized an institutional auction to establish this scholarship. It is the intent of this organization that this scholarship be utilized to assist deserving students accomplish their educational goals. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA.


Danny Ludlum Memorial

Established in memory of Danny Ludlum for students preferably pursuing a degree in agriculture or related field. Preference is given to students from the Elsmore, Stark, Savonburg, and Moran areas; the son or daughter of an Elsmore Ruritan Member or Virginia Lodge #315; or active in a Stark, Savonburg, or Elsmore Church.


Suzanne & Edward P. Marquis Scholarship

Established during the Endowment Challenge of 1996 to help enhance the well-being of deserving students in pursuit of a higher education.


Leona & Frank Masterson Memorial
by John & Georgia Masterson

Established in 1996 by John Masterson, ACCC President, in memorv of his parents Frank and Leona Masterson. While neither Frank nor Leona attended college, both appreciated education and encouraged John's pursuit of higher education. Frank was an athlete and followed athletics throughout his life, therefore the scholarship is for a student athlete at ACCC.


Avery & Joel Maxwell Memorial

Established in 1995 in memory of Joel and Avery Maxwell, two small boys who were killed along with their mother in a car-train accident in 1988.


J.P. McFadden Family Scholarship
by the Iola Grain, Inc. and family of James P. McFadden

Established by the business James P. McFadden founded and by his family. The family was raised in Iola and has strong ties to Allen County.


Barbara & Gary McIntosh Scholarship
by Barbara & Gary McIntosh

Barbara, Gary, and two of their three children received scholarships from ACCC. Gary attended ACCC when it was still located on the third floor of IHS. He graduated and continued study to become a mortician. Years later, he incorporated his insurance agency and concentrates on hiring agents to sell cancer insurance. Barbara attended ACCC, much later, when she was a housewife and a mother of three children. She completed college classes toward an elementary teaching degree and toward a nursing degree. It is the wish of Barbara and Gary for someone else to enjoy the same opportunity, of attending ACCC.


W.W. McLean Athletic Scholarship

Established in 1995 to support excellence in student-athlete development. The McLean's believe in the value of athletics to build student character. Preference is given to the men's baseball program.


Terry Sparks and John McRae Scholarship

This scholarship was established to promote the importance of youth in our county and serves as a commitment to provide for their education and future leadership.


Midland Brake Employee Scholarship

Established in the name of the Midland Brake employees for their outstanding dedication to excellence and quality in achieving Ford Motor Companies Q-l Award. Preference is given to a child of a Midland Brake employee. Selection is based on financial need and academic success.


Susan S. Miller Memorial Scholarship
by Ed & Betty Miller

This scholarship is established as a memorial to Susan by her family. She was a very special and courageous young woman who loved God, encouraged others and was involved in life despite a three and one-half year battle with cancer. She set goals and worked hard to reach them. One of these goals was to graduate as valedictorian and she did. She participated in cheerleading, forensics, theater, band, creative writing, Kayettes and received many honors. She knew the joy of accomplishment and encouraged those around her at each opportunity. Susan's enthusiasm was contagious. It is the hope of her family that each person who receives this scholarship will share Susan's single-minded determination to overcome obstacles and reach for the stars.


The Monarch Cement Company Scholarship

Established in 1996 in order to benefit Monarch employees, retirees, or their descendants. The Company has requested that the recipients be chosen with preference given to applicants who are employees, retirees, their dependents or descendants. Scholarship awards are intended to cover the cost of tuition for applicants in each category named above by descending order until expended. If there are more applicants than funds, the funds shall be distributed among eligible candidates in the last category where funds still exist proportionate to the number of hours taken. If funds generated by The Monarch Cement Company Scholarship are in excess of awards made to the above, and no further applications are received from Monarch candidates which meet eligibility requirements, remaining funds shall be awarded by the ACCC Endowment Association as needed in the general scholarship fund. May 1 application deadline.


Viola A. & Ralph Moser Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of the Mosers for their continued support of education and the unselfish concern they have demonstrated throughout their lives to their friends, family, and the college. Preference is given to Vanessa and Ashley Kerr when and if they choose to utilize this scholarship fund established in their honor.


Beverly & Tom Murrill Scholarship

Established in 1993 to benefit the students of Allen County Community College and recognize the importance of providing additional opportunities for those seeking degrees in higher education. Preference is given to Allen County residents.


Wilson Eugene Myers, M.D. Memorial

Established in 1995. Dr. Myers, a physician and former teacher, believed strongly in education and encouraged many young people in their educational goals.


Floyd C. Smith Scholarship

Established in 1965 at the time of Mr. Smith's retirement after 37 years as a teacher, coach, and principal at Iola High School. The scholarship is awarded to an Iola High School graduate based on financial need and probable academic success.


Lawrence Singer Memorial

In memory of Lawrence Singer who graduated from Marmaton Valley High School in 1942. He served in the United States Navy during WWII as a pharmacist mate. Mr. Singer was also a father of three graduates from lola Junior College. Preference is given to a Moran or Marmaton Valley High School student.


Kenneth L. Singer Memorial

Established in memory of Kenneth Singer who passed away in November of 1989. During his lifetime he had many accomplishments including graduating from Marmaton Valley High School as Valedictorian. In 1969 he graduated from the Allen County Junior College where he served as President of the Student Council. Preference is given to a Moran or Marmaton Valley High School graduate.


Sonic Drive-In of Iola

This scholarship was established to provide opportunities for students involved with the athletic programs at ACCC to accomplish their educational dreams. Preference is given to the men's basketball program.


M.E. & Robert F. Stadler Scholarship

Ms. Stadler and her hrother, Robert F. Stadler, both enjoyed their college days and pursuit of degrees in higher education. It is their hope that young people will be assisted by this scholarship to attain their goals in higher education.


Donna & Robert V. Talkington Athletic Scholarship

The Talkington's appreciate that baseball and foothall scholarships helped give Bob the opportunity for higher education. Hopefully this scholarship will assist other young athletes pursue their dreams while they experience the comradeship of being a part of college athletics. Preference is given to the men's baseball program.


Susan & Kent Thompson Scholarship

The Thompsons recognize the benefits of athletics and the important role athletics can play in the formation of character, meaning of commitment, dedication, and teamwork, and the life-long learning that athletes experience from participating in sports. Therefore, the Thompsons have estahlished this scholarship to provide the same opportunities that were given to them as young adults.


Arlene and Leland Ulrich Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of Leland Ulrich and in memory of his wife Arlene. Leland, a long-time resident, concerned citizen, and successful businessman was one of the first major contributors to the Endowment Challenge. His community-minded attitude and dedication to the youth of Allen County is commendable.


Josephine (Kress) Voelmeck Memorial

This Memorial was established in 1995 by her brother, Dr. Jacob (Jay) Kress. Recipient must be a student preparing for a degree in nursing or medical technology.


Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Scholarship

Established to honor all those who have contributed to the success of ACCC over the years and to help guarantee future growth for ACCC and the community.


The Walden Scholarship
by Shirley and Robert Walden and Becky and Bill Walden

Established to provided opportunities for deserving students interested in Pre-pharmacy, dental hygiene, or computer science. Preference is given to students in Allen County.


Iola Wal-Mart Scholarship

Provided by the Wal-Mart Foundation in 1996 to aid students in accomplishing their educational goals and self improvement efforts. Preference is given to Wal-Mart Associates and dependents with minimum college entry of 2.0 GPA.


Jerry & Sharon Whitworth Scholarship

Established in 1996 by the Whitworth's who enjoy supporting their community. The purpose of this scholarship is to help students attain their goals of receiving a higher education and to become life-long learners.


O. Lucille Winter Scholarship

Established in 1989 through the estate of O. Lucille Winter. Mrs. Winter taught school for more than 40 years. She was characterized as a strong teacher and a good disciplinarian who always worked for the best interest of students. Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA.


Roberta & A.J. Yavorn Memorial Scholarship

Established by Roberta Yavorn in her lifetime, and then additionally funded in 1995 through her estate following her death. This scholarship fund is in memory of her husband, A.J. Yavorn, herself, and their son, Allan Yavorn. The Instructional Resource Center at ACCC is named in their honor. >/B>

External scholarships are financial resources offered by sources other than the college or the Endowment Association. Allen County students may request further information about these scholarships by contacting the individuals listed.
