Relay's Shine at KT Woodman
KT Woodman @ Wichita, KS

This past weekend, the Allen County Red Devils traveled to Wichita State for the 58th Annual KT Woodman Meet. The meet conditions were not ideal for great performances however that did not seem to detour the Red Devil Track team. The Red Devils got things started off on a good note with their 4x100m performance clocking a time of 42.36, finishing 4th and missing the qualifying mark and school record by 1 tenth of a second. "This was the first time we had all of our A-team 4x100 members together." "I really didn't know what to expect going into the meet because I had not seen these four together yet this year." DeGrado said. "Chase got out and made up the stagger after the first turn, but we had a little trouble on two of our handoffs which cost us at least a second." "But considering this is the first time they've run together, I will take that time with those handoffs any day." "Once they get their handoffs down, that relay team is going to clock a very fast time." But considering the conditions and other interferences they ran well.
Lee Johnson ran a personal best in the 100 and again finished well in front of the runners in his heat. Lee clocked a time of 10.87 which winning by a body length. "Lee needs to get a better heat draw, with a better heat; Lee could easily run 10.60 and qualify for Nationals." DeGrado said. Lee also competed in the Long Jump and ran 3rd leg on the 4x400m relays. Lee placed 6th with a jump of 21-07.5" in which he fell back in the sand and they took the mark from his hands not where he actually landed. That jump was well in the 23's. Phillip Dale had a little bit of trouble finding the board. His first attempt was about 24 which would have got him to Nationals, but he scratched barely. He also had trouble on his other jumps. "I think Phillip felt like he had to something extra in order to jump far, which was not the case." "But Phillip has KU Relays coming up this week, so I expect him to bounce back and do big things." Andrew recorded a personal best in the 400m hurdles despite there being a +30mph wind. The 4x400m relay ended the meet for the Red Devils on a positive note. They clocked a season's best 3:24.08 which is 2 tenths shy of the school record. "Chase led us off from the start with a 50.55, which was Chase's first outdoor 400 of the season." "Chase got us started which were important for us to have a solid first leg to set us up to run fast." DeGrado said. "We just found out Sunday that our 4x100 and 4x400 relays qualified for the KU Relays, and I look for them to break the school record and qualify." Also, Phillip Dale will be jumping and Michael Valenti will be running the 5000m.
