| The conference meet did not go as well as we would have liked but with our numbers this year, I feel that we competed well at times. I think our energy was low at the start which hurt us later on in the meet. We just looked really flat early, however, towards the end we really started to show effort and then when we found out we were in 4th but Highland and Coffeyville started closing. In the end we finished up with a score of 62pts, Coffeyville had 63pts and Highland had 64pts. Unfortunately we did not have two of our top freshman competing. Brandon Agee was injured as well as Lee Johnson Jr. Those two would have score at least 20 points together, which would of got us 4th. There was controversy in the Distance Medley Relay. As our 3rd leg was getting ready to hand off to our 4th leg, the lap counter made a mistake and tried to stop them from handing off. I ran out on the track and was instructing Nik Stranghoner to hand the baton off to Tim Snyder, both were confused and our 50meter lead on Neosho was down to just 10meters and I knew their 1600 leg was a little faster than ours. They ended up beating us by less then a second which cost us points. That right there was a two point swing. “We can’t beat ourselves up over things like that, because those things happen, you just have to rise up to the occasion and perform,” DeGrado said. We had a chance to finish 4th place when the 4x400m started. Everybody’s favorite race to watch, and we ended up getting beat by Coffeyville by less than a second. All of the legs on the 4x400 had already ran 3 to 4 other races that day so their legs were very tired. Chase split the leg with a 50.32. Coffeyville’s anchor had a good 40meters on Chase, and when Chase got the baton, he basically went all out and closed the gap but just ran out of race. If had 10 more meters he would of passed Coffeyville and we would have finished 4th place. The indoor season was a great learning experience for both my athletes and myself. We’ll be implementing some changes. One thing we can take from this Indoor season, is Allen County was competitive which hasn’t been the case in recent years. I see us competing for 3rd place come outdoors. We’ll have events that are more suited to our personnel. Our throwers are better suited for the outdoor events as well as our sprinters. |
