Tax Information

There are various ways to access your tax information that will provide us with an acceptable form of documentation.  Your 2024-2025 FAFSA requires 2022 tax information.

Through the FAFSA Online:
Each contributor (anyone who is required to provide information on your FAFSA form)  must provide consent and approval to have your federal tax information transferred directly from the IRS into your FAFSA form via the Future Act Direct Data Exchange (FA-DDX). Providing consent and approval is mandatory for each FAFSA cycle, even if you or your contributors don’t have an SSN, didn’t file a tax return, or filed a tax return outside the U.S.

NOTE:  If you or your contributors don’t provide consent and approval to have your federal tax information transferred into the FAFSA form, you won’t be eligible for federal student aid.

For additional information regarding tax requirements for your 2024-2025 FAFSA, please click here.

You and your contributors should have your tax returns on hand when you fill out the FAFSA form. Even though your tax information will be transferred directly into the FAFSA form, you may still need your tax records to answer certain questions. Acceptable Tax Documentation (if required)includes one or more of the options listed below:

  • Signed copy of IRS form 1040 that was filed with the IRS:
    • SIGNED copy of your federal tax return, including all applicable schedules.
  • Tax Return Transcript:
    • To Request Online:
      • Go to IRS Get Transcript and select “Get Transcript Online.” Successful use of this free tool will generate a PDF version of your Tax Return Transcript. This option may not be available to all tax filers. The information you provide must match what is on record with the IRS to retrieve your information. Through the online system, you can obtain:
        • Tax Return Transcripts
        • Verification of Non-filing
        • Wage and Income Transcripts
    • Online request to get transcript by mail:
      • Go to IRS Get Transcript and select “Get Transcript by Mail.”  Be sure to request a “Tax Return Transcript.”
      • The transcript is generally received within 10 days from the IRS's receipt of the request. If your address has changed since your taxes were filed, do not use this method. Instead, request it through the Paper request form.
    • Paper request form:
      • Mail or fax the IRS Form 4506-T. The transcript is generally received within 10 business days from the IRS's receipt of the request. Be sure to have this mailed directly to your address first. Once you receive it, you can provide us a copy with your student ID included. Through this form, you can obtain:
        • Tax Return Transcripts – check box 6a
        • Verification of Non-filing – check box 7
        • Wage and Income Transcripts – check box 8
    • By telephone:
      • Use the IRS toll-free phone number 1-800-908-9946 and follow the voice prompts. Be sure to order a “Tax Return Transcript.”
      • Verification of Non-filing and Wage and Income Statements are not available with this method. The transcript is generally received within 10 days from the IRS's receipt of the request.

If you amended your tax return or requested an extension, there are requirements other than the tax return transcript or original tax forms that must be submitted. Please contact our office for assistance and any questions.

Amended Return

Starting with the 2024-25 award year, amended tax data will be transferred into the FAFSA using the FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange (FA-DDX) only if a 1040-X amended tax return was filed and processed by the IRS before the FAFSA was filed.

An individual whose amended return is filed or processed after the FAFSA is filed must provide:

A signed copy of the IRS Form 1040X, “Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,” that was filed with the IRS or documentation from the IRS that include the change(s) made by the IRS; AND one of the following:

  • A signed copy of the IRS Form 1040 and applicable schedules that were filed with the IRS; OR
  • An IRS Tax Return Transcript (that will only include information from the original tax return and does not have to be signed)

Filing Extension

An individual who is required to file an IRS income tax return and has been granted a filing extension by the IRS beyond the automatic six-month extension for the tax year, must provide:

  • A copy of IRS Form 4868, ‘‘Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,’’ that was filed with the IRS.
  • A copy of the IRS’s approval of an extension beyond the automatic six-month extension for the tax year.
  • Verification of Non-Filing Letter (confirmation that the tax return has not yet been filed) from the IRS or other relevant tax authority dated on or after October 1.

Tax Return Not Required or Filed

Beginning with the 2024-25 FAFSA:

Providing FA-DDX consent and approval is mandatory for each FAFSA cycle, even if you or your contributors didn’t file a tax return. If you or your contributors don’t provide consent and approval to have your federal tax information transferred into the FAFSA form, you won’t be eligible for federal student aid.
