Why can't I find my class at

The URL to access your courses is

What settings does my browser need to access Blackboard?

Required browser settings for logging into Blackboard include the following:

My 4 x 4 password doesn't work.

Your password is the first four letters of your last name (all lowercase) plus the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). For example, if your name is smith and your SSN ends in 1234, your password would be smit1234. If your SSN was not available, we replaced it with four nines "9999" and your password would be smit9999.  If you have tried both options and still cannot log in, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. My class is not showing up in Blackboard.

Classes do not show up until the first day of class at the beginning of the semester.

I tried to submit my quiz/test, but it wouldn't go through.

This generally happens when the internet connection fails, when you minimize/maximize the window, when you use the scroll wheel on the mouse, when you use the back arrow or when you double click too often. We recommend that you copy and paste the entire test/quiz into a word document and email it to your instructor. Your instructor may be able to grade it manually. Only your instructor can reset a test/quiz if needed.

I cannot see ________ but my instructor says it is available. Can you help me find it?

Please check to see if you have a certified browser.  The certified browser list is located at the login page of Blackboard at  If you still have problems, you can email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I can't add a thread to the discussion board.

Some discussion boards expect you to reply to threads created by the instructor.

When I attempt to post to the discussion board, my browser shuts down.

You need to log in, locate personal information, and then virtual textbox editor. You will need to make the virtual textbox editor unavailable. If the problem persists, additional technical support is available at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

When I attempt to take a quiz, I receive a message that the quiz has already been taken.

You probably double-clicked on the quiz which opened and submitted it instantly. The instructor will need to reset the quiz.

I am attempting to view something in my class. All I can see is a square filled by a red "x".

You need to download the latest version of Java. Go to which will determine what version you need and help you through the process.

What can I do if the font on my screen is too tiny to see?

Most browsers permit you to set the font size of your screen for your convenience. For some reason, yours got set to "Tiny." To reset your font to a legible size, try one of these:

Hold the Control button and scroll up with the mouse wheel. This lets you adjust the displayed font size in Mozilla. Check the accessibility options to see if they have been set for tiny fonts. Set the font size at View -> Zoom In++ (to make larger)

My instructor said she updated one of the pages on Blackboard, but it still looks the same to me. What's happening?

Modern web browsers will "cache" (or keep a local copy of) web pages in order to make browsing faster. It is likely that you are looking at an old copy of the page that's actually on your computer rather than in Blackboard. You can force your browser to update the page from the web by clicking the "Reload" or "Refresh" button at the top of the screen.

I took my test but I don't see a score. Why is there an exclamation point or a padlock in my gradebook?

When a test is started but not completed, a padlock appears in the gradebook. If you instructor set the assessment for multiple attempts, then you will be able to take it again. However, if the instructor set it for a single attempt, you will need to contact your instructor for a reset. An exclamation point means that the instructor needs to grade the assessment before your score will appear. An exclamation point also appears in the gradebook if you exceeded the time limit allowed for an exam. Exams do not shut down when the time limit is reached, but the assessment tracks how long you worked after the deadline.

I sent in an assignment but my instructor says that Blackboard has locked it and it cannot be graded. I know I finished it. What went wrong?

At the bottom of the assignment page are three buttons. The "Cancel" button will cancel your work and the "Submit" button will send your assignment to your instructor for grading. This problem is usually caused by the "Save" button, which will save your assignment but not send it to your instructor. If you click "Save" then your instructor will see that you are working on your assignment (it will be "locked" on your instructor's page), but your instructor will not be able to view your saved files until you submit your assignment. You should go back to the assignments page and click the "Submit" button when you have completed your work in order to actually send it to your instructor.

I'm trying to add a comment to our class discussion board, but it isn't working. However, if I go to the college's computer lab or use a friend's computer I seem to be able to post without any problems. Any ideas on what's causing this?

This is pretty unusual behavior. However, since you are able to post from other computers then the problem would seem to be with your computer, not the Blackboard system.

You should check your computer for viruses, spyware, and add on tool bars. All of these may cause problems when posting to your discussion board. You should first ensure you have good anti-virus software and that your virus definitions are updated. Then scan your whole disk to look for viruses.

You should also scan you disk for spybots. There are two good programs you can download and use for free to help find and remove spybots: Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware.

Lastly, check to see if you have adding any tool bars on your browser and consider removing them.
